The first steps towards the foundation of the company were taken by Jules-Louis Audemars in 1875. As well as Patek Phillipe and Vacheron Constantin they divided responsibility for watch production (Audemars) and commercial side (Piguet). From the very beginning Audemars Piguet focused on very expensive complicated watches. First of all these were pocket chronographs and minute repetition, which movements were made directly in the workhouse. Since Le Brassus was a place, where numerous watchmakers started their work, they did a truly right choice. Audemars Piguet world sales became quite successful not only in Europe, but in America also.

Although Audemars Piguet found itself in critical position because of crashes on the stock market as well as the Great Depression it was able to come back. The World War II is the period when Audemars Piguet created several successful timepieces.

After death of Audemars Piguet founders their production was in decline, until the grand appearance of Royal Oak. In 1972 well-known Gerald Genta designed legendary watch. Royal Oak was a unique mark of masculine power. These watches have octagonal case outline with eight hexagonal screws, which makes it look noble and luxurious. After Royal Oak first appearance at Basel fair, everybody admitted the success of the model, which was a surprise not only for those around, but for its creators.

2004 was the year that saw the appearance of the 4th watch that complimented the Tradition d�Excellence Collection of the company. The Royal Oak was produced only in 20 pieces. This chronograph included a hand-wound tourbillon with additional features like the double 10-day power reserve indicator and a thirty-minute subdial. The core of the watch was caliber 2893. Both case back and bracelet were made in platinum 950.

The company continues creating exclusive timepieces and together with Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe it forms the "big three" in the production of fine watches.
