The year 2006 marked the appearance of a novelty Panerai watch - Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT. The remarkable fact about the timepiece is that it is powered by the movement that was born at the brand's manufacture in Neuchatel. The new watch followed the steps of the Radiomir 8 Days GMT introduced a year earlier in 2005. It became the first to be equipped with the same movement - Calibre P.2002.
 Drop a glance at Luminor 1950 and you will realize that the design of its case hints at the brand's relation to the military world. However, the Panerai master watchmakers have taken care of refreshing the case's design and giving thorough attention to every single detail. The case is created in three parts and produced from steel with brushed finish. It is 44 mm in diameter. The 2 mm thick sapphire crystal has an advantage of anti-reflective treatment. The steel bezel of the case features polished finish. The transparent case-back is protected with screws, with sapphire crystal window.
In fact, every single Panerai timepiece may be easily distinguished from other brands' products. Pay attention to the winding crown protected by a special bridge - a feature patented by Panerai. The bridge over the crown is provided with REG. T.M. inscription as a proof of its exceptional nature. It guarantees the proper water-resistance of the timepiece - down to 100 meters.
The Calibre P.2002/1 embodies the complexity of Panerai creations based upon rich technical expertize and exclusive craftsmanship. The first brand's timepieces to offer an advantage of 8-day power reserve were developed in the 1940s. The Panerai movement of today provides the same power reserve due to applying three spring barrels.
To give a Luminor 1950's owner a comfort of accurate hands-setting and provide synchronization with the reference time signal, the Panerai specialists developed the zero reset mechanism that makes the seconds hand jump to zero. At the same time this zeroing system at once stops the balance wheel.
The construction of the movement has been fulfilled while using innovative watchmaking techniques. The hand-wound mechanism comprises 245 components. It features a free-spring balance and no generally accepted regulator. As a result, to reach a completely precise regulation, it is necessary to adjust the screws right on the balance wheel. The movement performs at frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
The Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT features black cushion-shaped dial. The dial consists of two superimposed plates. The watchmakers perforated the upper plate and covered the lower one with luminous substance. There are luminous numerals and hour markers on the dial. A small calendar window is placed at 3 o'clock, while the seconds dial positioned at 9 o'clock creates an eye-pleasing symmetry. The power reserve indication is found at 6 o'clock. It is represented by a triangular-shaped index moving across a linear scale.
The hour and minute hands are baton-shaped. The thin arrow-like hand positioned in the center of the dial is responsible for indicating the time of the second time zone. The seconds dial comprises the day-night subdivision in a tiny circular aperture. The aperture shows either a black or a white color - for the night or day time respectively.
The Panerai Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT watch goes with black hand-sewn leather strap featuring brushed steel big-sized personalized buckle. In addition, the timepiece is supplied with steel screwdriver and one more rubber strap. The brand planned to produce 1500 pieces for 2006. It has been in distribution since September, 2006.
