The story of the unique watch is closely related to the name of Mike Horn, hero of the Arktos Expedition, who performed round the North Pole expedition that started in August, 2002 and lasted for two years. Mike tested the watch under extreme weather conditions and high magnetic fields.

Mike Horn became the first man to travel round the Arctic Circle on foot, skis, sailing boat and kayak. On the trip he was permanently accompanied by the specially developed Panerai Luminor. During the first phase of the passage, Mike Horn used a stainless steel Panerai Luminor Amagnetic. The watch�s movement was encased in a soft iron case to provide an anti-magnetic protection, and specially oiled to protect it from the extreme Arctic temperatures ranging from -70º to +15º. The rest of the expedition Mike Horn was wearing the Luminor GMT which helped the traveler to determine the north.

If the hour hand points at the sun, north is at midway between the hour hand and 12 o�clock. By using the 24-hour dial, the Luminor GMT turns the determination of north into a very easy process. The 24-hour scale indicated on the outer edge of the dial denotes that the midway point does not have to be estimated - the supplementary 24-hour hand points to the sun and north is at 24.00.

The Luminor GMT Arktos measuring 44 mm in diameter in stainless steel case with brushed finish features a 42-hour power reserve. There is a date opening at 3 o�clock. The timepiece is water-resistant to 300 meters. On the case-back there is the engraving of the logo of the Arktos expedition � the drawing of the globe demonstrating the route passed by Mike Horn. Black dial with luminescent markers and Arabic numerals, small seconds at 9 o�clock, indication of second time zone on the outer edge represent some of the watch�s distinctive features.
